the Torah study now occurring in Israel, without exception, has little to with the long history of Torah study. Full-time Torah study was for a minuscule number of metzuyanim, not your average shmilu or yankrel. What is more, yeshivot like Volozhin, Telz, Slabodka, etc, were famous for diversity not conformity. In addition to its traditional graduates, Slabodka produced, RYYW who followed Rav Avraham Eliyahu Kaplan, both zichron tzaddikim leverocha, as heads of the Hildesheimer rabbinical college. Perhaps Slabodka's most prominent talmudist was the GRASH, ZTL. Prof. Harry Wolfson, was an earlier graduate.

Today, Torah study is akin to davening, a purely religious effort, devoid of concentration on producing the next generation of klal Yisroel's scholars and manhigim. As many recognize, the greatest place for METZUYANIM to study talmud and halakha is the HU. Slabodka or the Mir only share a name with their hallowed past.
